How to Use a Cleansing Balm (and Why Double Cleansing Works)

If you wear sunscreen or makeup, water alone will not remove it. That is the whole reason cleansing balms exist, and it is why most routines that "stop working" are really just routines that never got clean skin to begin with.

Why an oil-based first cleanse

Sunscreen filters, silicones and long-wear makeup are oil-soluble. A foaming gel cleanser is water-based, so it slides over them. An oil or balm dissolves them on contact — like dissolves like. You then follow with your normal cleanser to lift the balm and everything it has broken down. That two-step order is what people mean by double cleansing.

How to actually use one

  1. Start dry. Dry hands, dry face. Water on the balm makes it emulsify too early and it stops dissolving anything.
  2. Warm and massage. Take a small scoop and work it over dry skin for 30–60 seconds. Spend the time on your nose, jawline and hairline where sunscreen collects.
  3. Add water, then emulsify. Wet your fingers and keep massaging. The balm turns milky. This is the step most people skip, and skipping it is what leaves a greasy film behind.
  4. Rinse, then cleanse again. A gentle second cleanse takes off the residue.

Morning or night?

Night. In the morning your skin has nothing on it but the products you applied before bed, so a single gentle cleanse is enough. Double cleansing twice a day is a common way to end up with a compromised barrier.

Choosing between formulas

Selara stocks two STUNYOU balms and the difference is mostly what is left behind rather than how well they clean:

  • Avocado & hyaluronic acid — heavier slip, better if your skin feels tight after washing or if you are cleansing in air conditioning all day.
  • Rose & vitamin E — lighter finish, better in summer or on skin that gets congested easily.

Both are registered with the Saudi Food & Drug Authority, and the notification number is listed on each product page.

Two mistakes worth avoiding

Massaging for too long. More friction is not more clean. A minute is plenty; five minutes is irritation.

Using a balm to remove nothing. If you did not wear sunscreen or makeup that day, you do not need a first cleanse. Skincare is not a loyalty test.
