Most skincare advice is written for temperate climates. Riyadh is not one. Between the dry air outdoors, the drier air indoors, and sun exposure that stays strong for most of the year, a routine that works elsewhere often underperforms here for reasons that have nothing to do with the products.
The actual problem is water loss, not oil
Riyadh's humidity sits low for much of the year, and air conditioning removes moisture from indoor air as a side effect of cooling. Skin loses water to dry air continuously — transepidermal water loss. When that outpaces what the barrier can hold, you get tightness, flaking, and skin that stings when you apply anything.
The common mistake is reading that as "my skin is oily and also peeling" and reaching for something stronger. Oily and dehydrated at the same time is not a contradiction; it is the normal result of a barrier losing water while oil production continues.
What to change
Stop stripping in the first step
If your cleanser leaves your face squeaky, it is removing more than it should. Squeaky is not clean; it is a stripped barrier. Use a balm or oil first when you are wearing sunscreen or makeup, then something gentle after.
Apply to damp skin
Humectants like hyaluronic acid pull water from whatever is available. On dry skin in dry air, that means pulling from deeper in your skin. Apply to skin that is still damp, then seal with a moisturiser.
Use occlusion at night
A sheet mask or a heavier night cream is not a luxury step here — it physically slows water loss while you sleep in air conditioning. Once or twice a week is enough for most people.
Sunscreen is the anti-ageing step
UV exposure in the Gulf is high year-round, including through car windows during a commute. No serum compensates for skipping it.
A simple routine that holds up
Morning: gentle cleanse, hydrating layer on damp skin, moisturiser, sunscreen.
Evening: cleansing balm if you wore sunscreen or makeup, gentle cleanse, treatment if you use one, moisturiser.
Once or twice weekly: a hydrating mask instead of your treatment step.
Add actives one at a time, with two weeks between additions, so you know what caused a reaction if one happens.
