Every cosmetic product sold legally in Saudi Arabia has to be notified to the Saudi Food & Drug Authority before it reaches a shelf. Most shoppers have never heard of this, and the ones who have usually cannot tell whether a given seller actually complied. Here is what the requirement means in practice.
What SFDA notification actually is
The SFDA runs a cosmetic notification system. Before a product can be imported or sold, the responsible party submits its formula, labelling, manufacturer details and safety documentation. If accepted, the product receives a notification number tied to that specific product from that specific manufacturer.
It is worth being precise about what this is and is not. Notification is not a medical endorsement, and it is not a claim that a product will work for you. It is a record that the product entered the country through a documented route, that its ingredient list was reviewed against restricted-substance rules, and that someone is legally accountable for it.
Why it matters more in skincare than in most categories
Skincare is one of the easiest categories to counterfeit. Packaging is cheap to imitate, the product inside is hard to assess by eye, and the difference between a genuine formula and a refilled jar may only show up as a reaction weeks later. The grey market for imported beauty products is large, and a lot of it moves through social selling where there is no paperwork at all.
Counterfeit and undocumented cosmetics have a track record of containing substances that are restricted for good reason — undeclared steroids in brightening creams, mercury compounds, preservatives above permitted limits. A notification number does not make a product perfect. It makes it traceable, which is the part that protects you.
How to check before you buy
- Look for a stated notification number. A seller who has done the work will publish it. A seller who has not will talk about "original" and "authentic" without ever showing a number.
- Check who the responsible party is. A legitimate retailer operates under a registered commercial entity, not only a social media handle.
- Be suspicious of prices far below the market. Genuine imported skincare carries real import, notification and logistics costs.
- Check the Arabic labelling. Products cleared for the Saudi market carry compliant labelling. A jar with no Arabic anywhere on it did not come through the front door.

- ابحثي عن رقم إشعار معلن. البائع الملتزم ينشره، وغير الملتزم يتحدث عن «أصلي» و«original» دون أن يعرض رقماً.
- تأكّدي من الجهة المسؤولة. المتجر النظامي يعمل تحت كيان تجاري مسجّل، لا حساب في وسائل التواصل فقط.
- احذري الأسعار الأقل بكثير من السوق. المنتج المستورد الأصلي يحمل تكاليف استيراد وإشعار وشحن حقيقية.
- افحصي الملصق العربي. المنتجات المُخلّصة للسوق السعودي تحمل ملصقاً مطابقاً. العبوة الخالية من أي عربية لم تدخل من الباب الصحيح.
